- Dorine Janssens
I was born in the Netherlands. At the age of 5 I moved to Singapore where I lived for two and a half years, followed by two and a half years in Dubai, five years in England and finally back to Singapore for four more years. Throughout these 18 years I have been privileged with countless opportunities; for example having attended nine schools I am used to change and enjoy meeting new people and being introduced to new cultures.
Choosing to take a Gap Year through UWCSEA has definitely proven to be a worthwhile experience. I enjoy teaching the children here as they give so much positive energy to those around them. Having learnt new things everyday from them, im definitely looking forward to my time here!
- Billy Thomas
My name is Billy Thomas, I lived in England for my entire childhood up until the age of 15, at which point I moved to Singapore. Being in Singapore and at United World College opened me up to a whole world of new opportunities, including trips all over South East Asia for sport and humanitarian projects. As a result of a combination of these two things I became involved with BABSEA after the first annual Kep half marathon. Following this I worked in Chiang Mai with the organisation for a week with 4 friends and my involvement with BABSEA has continued
ever since.
Phnom Penh has been a fantastic place to be located for the last month and working with the kids in AZIZA and Rudi Boa, the two schools that Dorine, one of the other five volunteers i’ve been living with, and I have been teaching in has been incredibly rewarding and enjoyable! The students, young and old, have so much potential and it has been great seeing them improve in terms of their English even over such a short period of time. The 4 months seem to be racing by, I’m having a great time!
- Tarita Weber
After growing up and living in Bali for most of my childhood, moving to Singapore for High School had been a significant change! Fortunately going to school in UWCSEA expanded my global awareness and opened up invaluable opportunities for me, ranging from school productions, to sports events, to Global Concerns work.
I am currently pursuing my passion for humanitarian work in Cambodia where I am volunteering at Bridges Across Borders South East Asia. I am involved in their Empowerment and Legal sector, where the team is trying to stop current forced evictions. In addition, I am also involved in the Child Protection Program, where I am teaching English, Art and Sports in slum schools. My students’ curiosity and eagerness to learn are a significant motivation to continue working and sharing my experiences in service-related work in the future!
